New Terrapin baseball coach Erik Bakich is wasting no time rounding out his coaching staff.

Bakich already hired Dan Burton, who served last year as an assistant at Austin Peay, to be the team's recruiting coordinator. Still in search of two more coaches, Bakich is considering Joe Hastings, an assistant with Boston College, according to source within the Athletics Department.

Bakich would not confirm he was considering Hastings but did say he would most likely have another assistant coach in place by Friday.

Hastings just finished his third season with the Eagles working with the infield and hitters along with his recruiting responsibilities. He spent three seasons as Bakich's teammate at East Carolina, graduating in 2001, a year after Bakich.

Bakich said he still intends on filling out the vacant pitching coach position in the next couple of days as well. Last season, associate head coach Jim Farr served as the team's recruiting coordinator and pitching coach. It's unclear if the Terps are planning to add an additional coaching position for a pitching coach.

- VALMON TO WORLDS

Monday, the United States track and field team named Terrapin coach Andrew Valmon to the coaching staff of the squad that will compete at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin in August.

Under Valmon, a two-time Olympic gold medalist himself, eight Terp athletes have garnered All-American honors, including high jumper Dwight Barbiasz this past year.

Valmon joins a staff that is already dotted with college track and field luminaries. The staff includes Kansas distance specialist Stanley Redwine, jumps coach and Kansas State assistant Steve Fritz, and Oregon assistant Lance Deal, prolific performer in the hammer throw.

At the World Championships, which will run from August 15 through August 23,Valmon will be in charge of the sprinters and hurdlers for Team USA.

- DAMJANIC EXCELS

Terrapin men's swimmer Aleksander Damjanic swam a 2:02.04 in the 200 meter fly and was rewarded for his performance by being named Croatian National Champion in the event.

Damjanic also competed in the 100 fly and 50 fly at the event this past weekend and placed well in both. He finished sixth in the 100 with a time of 55.04, and 12th in the 50, finishing at 25.28.

Damjanic, a native of Zagreb, Croatia, is a rising senior and last season held the fastest times on the Terps in the 200 free, 100 fly and 200 fly.
