With the presidential election less than a month away, political activity on the campus is building up steam. Here is a list of election-related events coming up this week:

Monday

Stern Professorship Lecture featuring William J. Perry, secretary of defense under Bill Clinton; hosted by the School of Public Policy: 4 p.m. at the Tyser Auditorium in Van Munching Hall. Perry gives advice to the next administration on reducing the worldwide nuclear threat, an issue that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) worked with Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) to pass legislation on in the Senate.

Tuesday

The National Campaign for Fair Elections; hosted by Beyond the Classroom: Noon in Room 1102, South Campus Commons. The National Campaign for Fair Elections works to insure all voters have an equal chance to cast a ballot. The campaign will speak about controversies in Ohio in 2004 and Florida in 2000 and what is being done this year.

Lecture on Obama and McCain Health Reform Plans; hosted by the School of Public Policy: 12:15 p.m. in 1113 Van Munching. Jack Meyer, an expert on the American health care system and a visiting professor at the Schools of Public Policy and Public Health, speaks on the possibility of universal health care coverage in the United States.

Amy Walter on The Political Landscape; hosted by the University Honors Program, Office of Undergraduate Studies, and Department of Resident Life: 4 p.m. in Hoff Theater. Walter, the editor in chief of The Hotline, a top political website, speaks on the political landscape of the election.

Presidential Debate Watch; hosted by the Student Government Association, Academy of Leadership and Coalition for Civic Engagement and Leadership: 8:15 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union (debate begins at 9 p.m.). Watch the debate with other students, followed by a table discussion and a screening of The Daily Show.

Thursday

Framing Social Justice for the 2008 Election; hosted by the Consortium on Race, Gender and Ethnicity: Noon in the Maryland Room of Marie Mount Hall. Government and politics professor Ronald Walters hosts a discussion on the intersection of social justice, race, gender and the election.

Mock Debate; hosted by University View Apartments: 6:15 in the 4th Floor Clubhouse of University View. The College Democrats and College Republicans will have a mock debate on the issues of the election. State Sen. Jim Rosapepe (D-Prince George's and Anne Arundel), who represents College Park, will also speak on importance of the election.

Ron Paul at the Comcast Center; hosted by Maryland Students for Liberty: 6:30 p.m. for special VIP event with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) for $150 donation, 7:30 p.m. at Comcast for main event ($5 with student ID, $25 for general admission). Internet sensation and former presidential candidate Paul will endorse libertarian congressional candidates during a rally at the Comcast Center.
