Tomas Murphy won’t start ninth grade for another month, but according to a report from The Washington Post, the 6-foot-7 forward has already been offered a scholarship to play for the Terrapins men’s basketball team.
Murphy, a class of 2017 recruit, plays for the Mass Rivals 15U team on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit. According to 247sports.com, Murphy is the first player in the class of 2017 member to receive a scholarship offer from the Terps.
It’s likely that coach Mark Turgeon and his staff were drawn to Murphy because of his bloodlines. Murphy’s brother Alex currently plays at Duke and his brother Erik played at Florida and is now on the Chicago Bulls.
The trio’s father, Jay Murphy, played for the Washington Bullets in the 1980s, and according to The Post report, he also played under former Terps coach Gary Williams for two years at Boston College.
