A fight that began at R.J. Bentley's Sunday morning led to the stabbing of a man just outside of the bar, and the victim underwent surgery to repair a severed femoral artery in his upper leg.
Robin Patrick Smith, 24, of Silver Spring, was arrested by Prince George's County Police and charged with first- and second-degree assault, carrying a concealed weapon and intent to injure with a dangerous weapon in connection with the incident, according to court documents. Court case records show he has never been previously arrested for any criminal charges.
Maj. Kevin Davis, District 1 commander of the Prince George's County Police, said the victim was treated at MedStar Health in Columbia after he was stabbed during the fight. Although the victim's injuries were severe, Davis said, they are not currently believed to be life-threatening.
MedStar Health could not be reached for comment regarding the condition of the victim.
According to Davis, a fight began inside the bar when someone who was with the victim accidentally bumped into Smith. A fight escalated inside the bar between Smith, the victim and a few others, and they were all kicked out of the bar.
Davis said the fight continued on the sidewalk and into the street outside of Bentley's. Smith fled the scene, Davis said, and one of the people with the victim pointed out that the victim, who did not initially realize he had been stabbed, had blood on his right leg.
The victim flagged officers down about 2:15 a.m. near the corner of Knox Road and Yale Avenue, Davis said. Police began looking for the perpetrator, and the victim was transported to MedStar Health.
Davis said an officer noticed a man with bloody pants walking along Montgomery Street. The officer tried to stop the man, but the man fled. The officer chased him down and recovered a knife from the suspect that police believe may have been used in the assault.
"Our officers were in the right place at the right time," Davis said. "They made a keen observation that led to the apprehension of the suspect."
Smith's preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 27 at the courthouse in Upper Marlboro.
A manager at Bentley's declined to comment on the incident.
Sunday morning's stabbing was the first to occur at a College Park bar this semester. Over winter break, on Dec. 30, senior Sean Hammond was assaulted at the Thirsty Turtle by a man who allegedly accused him of stealing his money. According to charging documents, Hammond said he was cut twice on the face and once on the neck, then punched several times.
In December 2006, four non-student males were wounded after a gunman opened fire on them in the parking lot of the FedEx Kinko's on Hartwick Road. Police believed that the incident stemmed from a fight that began at Bentley's earlier that night.

A) Credit the police for tracking down the criminal.
B) Its amazing how many of these incidents stem from Bentley's. Maybe the City and the Police should stop fondling the owner's junk like they have been for years and finally come down hard on this guy. (Continued…)

Here's an idea...
Instead of a million sandwich shops, chinese restaurants, and other 'cheap eats,' let's build the downtown college park area up like it has been done at Arizona State in Tempe. (Continued…)

This is in response to the first couple of comments regarding this incident being the result of "street thugs" and "that they are invading the town of CP" - realistically, what the article doesn't tell you is that Mr. (Continued…)

I did not witness the fight that began at bentleys, but i was there seconds after the guy was stabbed next to the parking lot behind cornerstone. I also assisted him with my sweatshirt and putting pressure on the wound, i never got the victims name and i know i can't call the hospital to get any information, so if anyone knows anything and can tell me how he is doing it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!
