In a recruiting season filled with misfortune, the Terrapin men's basketball team finally got some good news.

Incoming freshman Sean Mosley - whose status was in question until his transcript was deemed passable - was officially accepted Tuesday and will be eligible to play with the Terps next season.

A 6-foot-4 guard from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Mosley was the state's Gatorade Player of the Year, scoring 27 points per game and leading his team to a Baltimore Catholic League title his senior season.

"We're happy to get Sean," coach Gary Williams said in a phone interview yesterday. "He's a good player, a strong guard who is a real good ballhandler for his size."

Mosley figures to play a key role with the Terps next season. He has a well-rounded game and can provide depth in both the backcourt and frontcourt. He has been active this summer, playing pickup games at Comcast Center with his new teammates.

Mosley committed to the university in August, but his presence on the 2008-'09 team was a bit in question until Tuesday. And with the way things had gone for the Terps this summer - potential impact recruits Gus Gilchrist and Tyree Evans both asked to be released from their commitments - it was natural to think that the Mosley situation would take a turn for the worse.

His 2.7 high school GPA, combined with his SAT score, was not enough to pass university admissions. But he attended summer school, improved on his standardized test and handed in a transcript good enough to become a student-athlete for the Terps.

With Mosley aboard, the Terps now have 11 players on next year's roster. With more spots to fill, Williams and the coaching staff are still on the trail of several recruits.

"There are still a couple of guys we're looking at," Williams said. "We've been recruiting these people for a long time."

Coaches are not permitted to discuss the names of specific recruits, but one potential signee is a 6-foot-9 forward center from Chicago named Steve Goins.
TurtleSportsReport.com reported last week that Goins committed to the university and is waiting for his transcript to be accepted.

No formal report from the Athletics Department has been made regarding Goins' future with the Terps.

Looking at a Bob Wade Type Season

Should I be excited that we've recruited another guard when we NEED big men? Based on Gary's usual guard recruit, we'll have to wait anyway until Mosley's junior year to see any real production out of him. (Continued…)

Great, another dummy who will either fail out or just play one season then leave in the middle of the semester

This frontcourt is unstoppable!

"unless you view O'Neal, Burney & Baxter as answers in the paint"

Holy crap, we signed Shaq and got Lonny Baxter back?! What are you talking about then? Our frontcourt will be amazing!

I didn't even know those guys had elibility left - won't Shaq have to sit out a year for transferring for LSU though? And hopefully Lonny gets out of jail before the season starts. (Continued…)

Bowman didn't come close to qualifying academically; last I heard, I think he was in talks with Kansas State?

Another Rhodes scholar graces the hallowed halls of the Maryland athletic department. I have a set of Hooked on Phonix DVDs that my five year old has already mastered. (Continued…)

A lot of smack-talking going on out there. Gary's getting it both ways. Recruit a talented kid that isn't up to Maryland's standards in the classroom, he's getting a bunch of dummies. (Continued…)
