Several South Campus apartment buildings and several businesses along Route 1 lost power this afternoon for about an hour due to two separate incidents along Rhode Island Avenue and Knox Road.
An electric pole on Rhode Island Avenue sparked and caught fire around 1:30 p.m., causing a power outage for 816 College Park customers, including some on-campus buildings, according to PEPCO’s Manager of Media Relations Bob Hainey. Hainey said the cause of the fire is unknown. A second incident also occurred along Knox Road, but Hainey said there was limited information about it.
Students reported losing power in all South Campus Commons buildings, the Varsity I and II, the View and most of downtown Route 1. A crew was dispatched to the scene and power was restored in roughly an hour, Hainey said.
