With their Friday night matchup against Houston in the first round of the NCAA tournament looming, the Terp men's basketball team probably has enough on their minds.
So fans could be excused if they think the federal government is piling on.
First, U.S. Rep. John Campbell (R-Calif.) objected Tuesday to a resolution honoring the Terps sponsored by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a university alumnus who represents College Park. Campbell's objection forced a vote on what generally would have benn a non-controversial measure. Today, the House voted to pass the resolution, but 132 representatives - all but two of them Republicans - voted against the bill.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama revealed he apparently doesn't think much of Terps Coach Gary Williams. When revealing his tourney picks to ESPN analyst Andy Katz Tuesday night, Obama picked the No. 4 seed Terps to lose in the second to No. 5 seed Michigan State.
"I like Michigan State here," Obama said. "Maryland's got a great player, but Michigan State's got a great coach, and I think that makes the difference."
That apparently means Williams - who has a national title and more than 600 career wins - doesn't qualify as a "great coach."
