A 19-year-old man was stabbed after a fight broke out among a group of people on Hartwick Road early Friday morning, police said.

The man who was stabbed during the fight near Hartwick Towers at about 2 a.m. on Friday, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Prince George’s County Police spokesman Henry Tippett said. The man who reportedly stabbed him was arrested at the scene.

Tippett added it is not yet known if the people involved in the fight are university students.

No crime alert followed the stabbing and Hartwick Towers residents said management didn’t notify them about the incident.

Many students who live in the building said they had not heard anything about the stabbing, and the few who had said they only knew what they heard from their friends and neighbors.

David Lin, a senior finance major, said someone told him some people got into a “scuffle” on Hartwick Road near Route 1.

“I heard a guy got stabbed in the neck,” Lin said, adding he remembered hearing sirens. “There were a lot of policemen.”

Another student, who did not want to give her name, said she called police after she witnessed part of the incident.

“We heard screaming, but everyone is always loud in this building, so we didn’t think anything of it at first,” the communication major said.

She ran to the window after hearing someone from outside scream, “I’m going to f---ing stab you!”

“We looked out the window and saw a group of people fighting, and all of a sudden we saw a kid covered in blood,” she said. “Then we called the cops.”

Several police cars arrived within a minute, she said.

Four or five people were involved in the initial fight, she added, but the “guy who seemed the most angry” is the one who stabbed the other man.

“I’m convinced they were just drunk kids,” she said, but she added that the stabbing still scared her.

“I was freaked out,” she said. “We hear people who are really violent a lot, but now that someone got stabbed ... I can’t believe that actually happened.”

The man who was stabbed was an attacker - the person arrested is innocent and you should definitely be ashamed of yourself - don't publish news that isn't factual

tk-
your friend definitely did not deserve to be stabbed but maybe he and his friends will think before they initiate an unprovoked physical fight next time... too many drunk guys galavant around these streets late night and think that they r invisible and that they can beat up whoever they want... this should be a lesson learned

Non-life threatening injuries? The victim was stabbed in the neck and side. He is still in the hospital recuperating from emergency surgery to repair a hole in his abdominal wall. His lingual nerve was also damaged. Prince George's County Police spokesman, Henry Tippett, should have followed up on the condition of the victim before reporting.

My friend is the one who got stabbed. This article seems fluffed up and exaggerated. No one yelled "I'm going to f---ing stab you" as it happened without warning and in a split second. Get your sources straight. And no he isn't a student at UMD, thats probably why it wasn't on crime report. God forbid they release crime statements when something happens right in front of campus; regardless of where they attend school.

James if I am interested in crime where I live I check the website of the agency that services my town, I do not expect to be hand fed every arrest they make. Try checking the website of the Prince George's County Police.

3 days later and no official report, just some rumors from a bystander who wasn't even there?

I agree. Most students trust the diamond back and would say it is a reliable source of news on campus. However almost all of the information you have provided in this article is false. I suggest that next time you provide us with facts rather than hearsay bullshit.
