Meet the bunnies: University’s three ‘Girls of the ACC’ bring Playboy to College Park

In October's issue of Playboy, nearly naked girls pose in dorm rooms and perch atop desks piled with books and dictionaries with college emblems, pom-poms and spirit posters in the background.  They are clad in skimpier versions of college spirit gear that fall from their bodies in various states of undress.

But take a close look around you next time you sit down in your Psychology class or peruse books in the library because some these co-eds — more often objects of fantasy than reality — walk among us.

Three students from the university grace the pages of Playboy's October issue in a "Girls of the ACC"  photo spread. More girls from this university were represented in Hugh Hefner's legendary magazine this year than any other ACC school.

"It was a boost of confidence," said alumnus Jennifer Lynn, one of the chosen girls. "It helps with self esteem. The girls in Playboy are beautiful so it was an honor to be in the magazine."

And to celebrate the magazine's Friday release, the girls who bared it all helped promote the issue with events at Axe Hair and Cornerstone Grill and Loft this weekend.

Crowds of students flush from the football team's victory a few hours earlier crowded into Cornerstone Saturday night to get autographed copies of the magazine and meet the university's very own Playboy models: Lynn, public and community health major Nöel Simone and junior marketing major Connie Du.

"It was so spur of the moment for me," Simone said. "I'm glad I did it, though."

At the event, which was co-sponsored by LifeStyles condoms and Axe, Cornerstone patrons got more than just a free show. Drinks in hand, students stumbled up to the promotional table, grabbing handfuls of complimentary LifeStyles condoms, Axe Hair shampoo, glow sticks, blinking necklaces that read ‘I <3 making out,' Girls of the ACC cups and shirts, along with, of course, their signed magazines.

"I love it because there's a lot of hot girls at Maryland," alumnus Jon Shapiro said. "And in the ACC, we have got to represent it. …The girls are pretty sexy and I am proud they went to Maryland."

Playboy's famous October college issue has been running in the magazine for 33 years and always generates a good amount of sales, Playboy publicist Liz Sablich said.

"We like to generate excitement about the issue," Sablich said. "In particular, we like to celebrate these beautiful girls. It is such a unique opportunity and we want them to feel special and proud."

The magazine rotates conferences each year. The ACC was featured for the last time in 2004. Each year, the number of women chosen depends on the conference and turnout for the auditions, Sablich said. Last year's issue spotlighted Big 10 schools, which tends to sees a larger turnout due to the larger population of the schools. The Big 10 spread contained about 40 young women last year, compared to the ACC's 15, Sablich said. Each school in the ACC is represented at least once, except for Boston College.

Tryouts at this university were held last spring before the final selection of girls were sent to Chicago in March and April for photo shoots.

After a few hours of hair and makeup preparation, they felt completely comfortable, the models said.

"It was so surreal," Lynn said. "You don't ever picture yourself in that situation, especially how quick it was. You were in the shoot and it was so quick, it was like just do it."

Lynn, who said her father used to collect Playboy magazines, said she always admired the women featured in the magazine.

"I have always wanted to do it," Simone agreed. "I never actually thought I would try out for it, but I saw the opportunity and I jumped on it."

In the next few months, the trio are up for coed of the month on Playboy's website. Simone and Du will be competing for November and Lynn for December.

"It's nice to know that it's not just a dead end," Du said. "I am enjoying it and will just see where it can go."

Even though they have been enjoying the experience and will continue to accept opportunities that come along, none of the women will be ditching their degrees to set up house in the Playboy mansion with Hef or take up a career posing naked.

"I definitely have my career in gear," Lynn said. "I'd love to do it part time, but I have a greater career focus."

As reams of magazines were handed out at the party Saturday, guys perused the pages with friends, this time with the models on the page standing a few feet away. For the girls, this hasn't really sunk in yet.

"Right now, it's still shocking," Simone said. "It is one thing to just think about it, but to see it is another thing. And it is going to be even weirder to see someone looking at it."

I don't see what the big deal is. The behaviour of these girls is no worse that the behaviour you will see from the majority of female UMD students on any route 1 bar on a weekend.

I am not disputing that these girls are sluts but let she who is without sin cast the first stone. Most of the female posters here have no room to talk. Most women are wh0res anyway so why single these girls out?

@Kevin H. - "We should not judge their motives because if given the chance, we all would probably pose and do the best we can."

What a stupid, ignorant thing to say. Of course we would not all do this "if given the chance." In fact, the vast majority of us would never even think about doing this.

And I'm sick and tired of people telling me not to judge . I'll judge whoever I want. I'm certainly not perfect, but that doesn't stop me from being able to discern when someone else does something that's wrong. Taking off your clothes to pose naked in a magazine is wrong. I'm judging the hell out of these girls. Deal with it. But to your point, I'm not judging their motives, I'm judging their actions.

"We should not be cruel and belittle them, they are still Terps."

Ha!!!!! It sure sounds like plenty of people are embarrassed that these girls are Terps. Why should we defend them? We're paying thousands and thousands of dollars to get a degree from this school, and these girls are actively decreasing the value of those degrees by their actions. Screw 'em.

"Ladies, have fun doing what you want to do, you aren't hurting a soul."

Yes, by all means, just have fun in the now, who cares about the consequences! I'm sure no one will remember this five years from now when you're applying for a job or getting married or having kids. It's just on the internet, who's going to ever know? I'm sure your parents and friends and children and relatives will never, ever find out or judge you in the slightest.

If offered the opportunity there is no way in hell I would take off my clothes and pose in a magazine. That magazine would be available for anyone to purchase, hell my little brother could go pick it up. My parents could see it. Not only that, but that magazine would be available FOREVER, my future spouse could see it, my kids could see it. Ladies please stop what you are doing the people you are hurting is every girl sitting next to you who wants a guy to listen to what she is saying instead of staring at her tits, wondering if he just saw them in the latest magazine.

Everyones comments seem to be one sided. The three young ladies had their reasons for posing in PB. We should not judge their motives because if given the chance, we all would probably pose and do the best we can. We should not be cruel and belittle them, they are still Terps. I don't read PB so I could be sitting next to them in class or waiting in line behind one of them and I would never know. Those of you who buy and/or read PB, you are just as bad for buying it or reading it. Ladies, have fun doing what you want to do, you aren't hurting a soul.

"First, jealousy breeds hate."
Very profound. Idiot.

"They were blessed with beauty so why not capitalize on it."
Ok, fine, try a beauty pageant, or modeling. Showing your tits to every guy in the country isn't exactly the smartest way to go about it.

"Dropping the "objectification of women" garbage labels you a feminist. It's a tired argument. Let it go."
Huh? I'm a feminist because I argue that posing naked objectifies women? What?

"Second, if you actually think posing in PB makes them easy, then try getting off the computer for 5 minutes and step outside. You'll find out that there are plenty other women who aren't in PB that are much easier."

I don't think anyone's arguing that there aren't a ton of sluts at College Park, this is one of the easiest places in the country for a guy to get laid. But does that make it good for these woman to advertise their whoritude for all the world to see? Are they trying to compete with all the rest of the easy lays in town?

"Women are beautiful, but seeing one in her birthday suit doesn't make all men think slut."

Of course it doesn't. When I see my girlfriend naked, I don't think she's a slut. But when I see a woman naked in a magazine, um, yeah, I assume she's a slut.

@ Yea Terps - "Ah yes, judge not lest ye be judged. Come on folks, it's freedom of expression. I think some of you missed the lessons on it and not judging based on the cover. I fail to see how women, or men, show lack of class for posing nude. I you go to another country, many of which have topless or nude beaches, do all those people lack class? "

Who said anything about freedom of expression? No one's saying these women can't do this, we're mocking them (and those who defend them) for their idiocy in thinking that this is somehow a respectable, classy or wise move. And the difference between going to a nude beach and posing naked for money in a national magazine is so vast that it pains me to even have to explain it to you. These women's children, their parents, their classmates, their friends - none of these people would ever see them at the nude beach. All of these people can see them in Playboy.

Ok, i'll be devils advocate here, and maybe they are breezing through college on their looks alone, and posing for playboy is all they'll ever do. However, maybe they are avid students with good grades and abmitions to be productive parts of society, who got an opportunity and took it. Saying this is what they're doing at college is pretty simple minded. Women are beautiful, but seeing one in her birthday suit doesn't make all men think slut.

Wow. nice job girls. This has nothing to do with freedom of expression, this has to do with the fact that UMD is now nationally associated with girls who have no problem taking off their clothes, this doesn't promote self-esteem, it promotes men to look at women for their bodies alone.
Did their parents get free copies? I mean they're the ones paying for college, and this is what the girls are doing at college....

@ Liz - Actually, I'm guessing that that's exactly what she learned in her time at UMD - that acting like a slut and posing naked for a porn mag is the proper way to build self-esteem and get people to respect her. After all, that's what my women's studies prof keeps telling me. Men respect women who degrade themselves. It's science.

How exactly does spreading your legs in a magazine help with self confidence? What exactly did Ms. Lyn learn in her 4 years at UM? Is your dad proud of you? Pathetic.

@ Your name - or, at the very least, when you run into them you can imagine them naked or think about all the times you've jerked off while looking at their pictures. That'll certainly encourage men to treat women with more respect or think of them as anything more than sexual objects. Way to empower yourselves, girls! Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, your mothers - they'd all be so proud of you! Girl power! And boobs!
