Prince George’s County Police are searching for a man who raped a female student in her off-campus home early yesterday morning.

At about 5:10 a.m., the suspect entered the 21-year-old student’s residence in the 7500 block of Dickinson Avenue, where he sexually assaulted the student in her bed, according to police.

District 1 Assistant Commander Capt. Daniel Lipsey said the victim was asleep when the suspect entered the house. After she realized the man was assaulting her, Lipsey said, she screamed and the suspect fled.

Police are unsure of how the man entered the student’s home or where he went after he left.

Lipsey said investigators will continue to examine the residence for clues as the investigation continues.

The suspect was described as a Middle Eastern or Latino man with dark hair and dark eyes. He is of a small build and medium height. Police did not include an age range in their description.

“We’re operating on very limited information right now because it’s still early in the investigation,” Lipsey said.

This is the first sexual assault crime alert to be sent out this semester. Lipsey said he does not believe this sexual assault is connected to other similar cases in which a man — known as the College Park “Cuddler” — crawled into bed with his victims.

“The description we have does not match the other cases, but we are going to go back over those cases and see if there’s any similarities,” he said.

The last sexual assault reported in a crime alert was in February, when a man raped a student and left her stranded on a highway after picking her up in his car.

Regardless of how the assailant made his way into the victim’s house, Lipsey said students should be mindful of safe practices — even while at home.

“The Prince George’s County Police Department would like to remind residents to make sure all doors and windows are locked when going to bed and to utilize any outdoor lighting on the exteriors of houses and residences,” a county police press release read.

Anyone with more information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit at (301) 772-4908.

Whoopie Goldberg:

Rape is non-consensual sex with another person obtained by force or the inherent threat of force. A stranger enters your home without your permission and then assaults you without asking for consent...sounds like rape to me.

First of all, the suspect is Latino or Middle Eastern, not "white Frat guy".

Second, if you don't know the difference between somebody saying "all muggings in CP are committed by black guys" and "all black guys in CP are muggers," I'm sure Maryland offers a logic class that you might want to look into taking next semester.

Fed Up your comment is completely absurd. I know several PG Officers that are doing fine things. Keep up the good work PGPD! I guess PG didn't handle the two recent shooting incidents in the City to your satisfaction either. They performed exceptionally and professionally making sure no innocent lives were at risk.

When I was robber in August it took no less than 40 minutes for a PG police officer to come to my apartment. I have experienced first hand how little the PG police care about students. It is up to us students to basically protect ourselves and look after one another. We cannot only make sure our own doors our locked, but when we drop our friends off, we must do the same. Never walk back alone and never let a friend walk back alone. The only time the PG police care about CP is when they have the opportunity to fine bars for underage drinking.

Feb '09 rape/kidnapping case status: The Defendant was granted bail bond of $100,000. The State's Motion for Defendant to forfeit passport or any other travel documents was granted in April. Also, the Judge recently granted the Guatamalan Defendant's Motion to Suppress Statement (statement was voluntary but violated Miranda).

Isn't anyone concerned about this ruling to suppress evidence? Isn't anyone interested in where abouts of the Defendant the other night?

Why is the Diamondback not following this case more closely? Is the campus community really this apathetic about February's brutal rape and kidnapping?

Hearing about violent crime often brings up thoughts and feelings about our own experiences. The Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Program Advocate Office is a free and confidential resource available to anyone in the UM community affected by sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking or sexual harassment. If you need to speak to someone immediately, a Peer Advocate is available 24 hours a day on our crisis cell phone at 301-741-3442. There is also information available on the health center website at http://www.health.umd.edu/services/victim_advocate/.

Predators often go places where they sense weakness. I am not going to blame the women of College Park for being raped. It is still true that if they were able to carry weapons, be it spikes or pepper-spray, and have defensive classes, a lot of these criminals would be deterred.

In addition, so many robberies and rapes have been perpetuated against drunk women. If you're planning on getting drunk, please stay with a large group. The other option, however unpalatable to the College Park crowd, but safer by far than toasting your livers- not getting drunk!

Young women, lock your doors and windows.
You were admitted to the Flagship institution of the University of Maryland System.
The University brags about the quality of its students at every opportunity.
Lock your doors and windows.

I would agree it's important for women in College Park to take every single precautionary measure imaginable to prevent this sort of thing and deter these types of criminals. The police probably can't improve on what they're already doing. But if you've read even basic information about so-called "cuddlers," it's pretty terrifying. Criminal sexual deviants often become progressively dangerous as they become more confident. You get a rash of similar crimes in College Park like this, you very well could have a rape or murder on your hands in the future.

Police can't be everywhere at once. It has nothing to do with having a city police force. There are plenty of PG Police in CP all the time. Plus the Campus Police patrol the neighborhoods as well surrounding the campus. I agree with helpful alumni. Start taking some common sense safety precautions before going to bed, such as locking your doors and windows, leaving your outside lights on at night!!!!

With all these sexual assaults here in College Park, students may have to start taking extreme measures, like locking their doors and windows before they go to bed at night!

This perp is extremely brazen to assault someone a block from a Police Substation.

Description roughly matches the defendant (who's still on trial) for February rape and kidnapping ~2 blocks from this location-- and who was captured after brazenly returning to the scene of the crime.

Is that suspect out on bail or what?

The city of College Park needs a police force. The Univ. Police do a good job but if you are off campus you are at the mercy of the PG police. Frankly, that police district has about 10 priorites higher than CP and is never around until its too late. The city has tried a program of contracting 2 or 3 off duty county officer to patrol the city but that really hasn't done much. Its shameful that a majority of UMD students live off campus and don't have any protection other than a rare glimpse of a PG county officer driving by. CP needs a police force for its 15,000 off campus students and city residents.
