One student was robbed of his cell phone and another was assaulted early Saturday morning after the pair was confronted by three men in the Subway parking lot on Route 1, police said.
The two male students, an 18-year-old from Annapolis and a 19-year-old from College Park, were walking in the parking lot near Subway at 7411 Baltimore Ave. when three men approached them, University Police spokesman Paul Dillon said.
One of the men then allegedly "struck one of the students and then slapped a phone out of the other student's hand," Dillon said, adding the students apparently did nothing to provoke an assault.
Two of the men then placed their hands in the waistbands of their pants to suggest they had guns, Dillon said, and all three fled toward College Avenue with the stolen cell phone.
All three suspects were described as dark-skinned and wearing blue jeans, Dillon said. The first was wearing a black baseball cap and a black hooded sweatshirt, the second was wearing a blue or green track jacket and the third was wearing a black jacket.
Following the incident, a crime alert was sent out to the university community. This marked the fourth crime alert this semester, compared to a total of five crime alerts last semester. Last spring, 12 crime alerts were sent.
Because the armed robbery occurred off-campus, Prince George's County Police are investigating.
County police did not respond to calls for comment this weekend.
