Terrapins football linebacker Alex Twine was arrested early Friday morning and charged with disorderly conduct and failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order after University Police witnessed him punching cars downtown, police said.
Twine, a freshman who turned 18 on Friday, and two others were reportedly seen in the lot behind Montgomery Hall at about 1 a.m., when an officer instructed them to stop what they were doing, University Police spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky said. Twine then allegedly ran away. After a foot chase, police caught up with Twine near Calvert Hall and arrested him, Limansky said.
His charges could increase to destruction of property if any vehicle owners report damages to police. The other two individuals were not charged with anything as they were not seen striking any vehicles, Limansky said.
A team spokesman confirmed Twine was a member of this university's football team. Twine started four games as the Terps' weakside linebacker and finished his freshman season with 44 tackles and one sack.
Team officials have not taken any action against Twine for his arrest Friday, the team spokesman said.
"We're aware of the incident and will let the judicial system run its course," he said. "We will handle the matter internally in accordance with our student-athlete code of conduct."
Twine, a Gaithersburg native, is scheduled to appear in court on January 30, and according to court documents, this is his first offense in the state.
