A University Police vehicle struck a 19-year-old man who reportedly walked away from the scene without injury at about 1 a.m. yesterday morning, police said.

The officers were responding to an assault reported at the Subway on Route 1 when the man — who is not a student at this university — stepped off the sidewalk near the intersection of Route 1 and Lehigh Road in front of the two police vehicles, one of which struck him in the leg, University Police spokesman Capt. Marc Limansky said.

When officers called an ambulance, the man declined help but submitted to a breathalyzer test, which showed he was intoxicated, Limansky said. His blood alcohol level was higher than 0.08 percent — the legal driving limit — but police declined to give the specific number.

The man was also found with fake identification, Limansky said. Police declined to release his name yesterday because the man has not been charged with any offenses, and the accident is still under investigation.

"All of our traffic incidents involving police vehicles are investigated, so if it looks like our officer did something wrong, it will be addressed," Limansky said.

Details about the incident in the Subway that police were originally responding to were not available as of last night, but Limansky said it did not end in any arrests or injuries.
