In the midst of a young offseason that has already seen six members of the Terrapins football team released from their scholarships, it seems at least one member of Randy Edsall's coaching staff is also considering his options.

The Denver Post reported Friday that offensive coordinator Gary Crowton has expressed interest in the vacant head coaching job at Colorado State, where he played defensive back in the late 1970s.

"I've contacted the school," Crowton told the Post. "I've not heard back from them. I'm sure they're putting together a committee and I think they've hired a company and they're looking at candidates. I'm just hoping to get in there so they give me a chance."

The Rams, coming off three consecutive 3-9 seasons, fired coach Steve Fairchild after this season.

Crowton has seven years of experience as a coach — three at Louisiana Tech and four at BYU.

His first season overseeing the Terps' offense was anything but a success. After the Terps drew praise for their high-tempo offense in a season-opening win over Miami, the team's attack steadily deteriorated as the team marched to a 2-10 finish. The Terps finished the year ranked sixth in the ACC in total offense and third in rushing.

Crowton, who is guaranteed $500,000 per year in his three-year contract, said through a team spokesman that he is "very happy at Maryland" and "looking forward to having a winning season in 2012."

"I have an interest because I played at Colorado State and at some point I want to be a head coach again," Crowton said in a statement. "My focus now is on recruiting and finding ways to improve our offensive consistency and production."
