Early arrivers to get extra loyalty points

Basketball ticketing policy changes; some fear switch benefits scan-and-leavers

In an effort to reward students who show up early for Terrapin men's basketball games, the Athletics Department has changed its student ticketing policy, granting students an extra loyalty point if they arrive at Comcast Center between 90 and 60 minutes prior to gametime.

The extra points will give an edge in priority for early arriving students who want to attend high-demand conference games against opponents such as Duke and North Carolina. The new system, which will go into effect Tuesday when the Terps host Indiana (Pa.) in their exhibition opener, drew sharp reactions from students.

Some said the policy will only further encourage scan-and-leavers — students who leave Comcast Center immediately after having their ticket scanned before games against less attractive opponents.

"I can see it making scanning and leaving worse," said junior landscape architecture major Marty Handelman, who said he normally shows up at least 30 minutes before doors open for men's basketball games. "I feel like there's a lot of flawed logic."

Senior Associate Athletics Director Brian Ullmann said the new policy is meant to reward those who show up an hour or more before gametime for their extra support.

"Obviously, our stance is that we don't want people to scan and leave," Ulmann said. "We hope that there's not students who take advantage of it. But we really want to reward the fans, and it's much harder to penalize those who scan and leave. There's no good, easy answer to that. ... We just want our students there, watching the whole game and having fun."

Ullmann said there will be no more designated entry times for games through winter break. The department will evaluate the system before spring semester and decide whether to continue it during the ACC season.

The loyalty point system is used to determine priority for ticketing. Students in the top 25 percent in points of those who request tickets to a game are guaranteed tickets, while the remaining requests are put into a lottery system where students' chances are weighed by point totals.

Sophomore civil engineering major Andy Pender said the new system could actually help curb the problem of scan-and-leavers, since fans who show up an hour before tipoff are typically too invested in the team to leave early.

"There's a bunch of people who just show up right on time, get in and leave," Pender said.
Others were wary of the change for other reasons.

"I already commit a lot of time for going to men's basketball games, and I go and it's intense and I have a great time," said sophomore English and journalism major Sam Nassau. "But I don't know if I really want to commit an extra hour just to sit around and do nothing. I feel like it's too demanding."

Ullmann said the department will reconsider if the new policy isn't working, but the goal of getting students to the games earlier will remain.

"We want as many fans and students inside Comcast Center as early as possible to help," Ullmann said. "I think the team really gets a bump from seeing a full student section when they're out there warming up."

This works out perfect for me. Now I can get there extra early, scan and leave, and get an extra loyalty point. Heck, with this new policy, I'll even have time to make it back to Cornerstone to catch tip off, after i've collected my extra loyalty point. SICK!

scanning and leaving will always be a problem. the AD cant fix it and everyone's ok with that. what we dont need is to reward those people who do scan and leave by giving them even more points. ridiculous

It is pretty obvious the AD is trying to generate more revenue from concessions because there is already an incentive to show up early, you get the better seats. This also hurts students with evening classes because they are unable to gain these extra points due to an academic commitment.

Also people who show up 15 minutes before the game are obviously coming to stay for the game while the scanner and leaver has no incentive to stay because they already got their extra loyalty points.

This is just poorly though out

It's quite ironic: With the current loyalty system, the highly popular "duke game" is the biggest reason for all those empty seats.

Just get rid of the loyalty points, have a pure lottery when demand exceeds supply. This removes all incentives to scan/leave. Any leftover seats, which there will be for almost every game, can be sold to the general public. A student seat with 40 year old in it is better then an empty student seat.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. Not only does it force you to get to a game an hour early to get this extra point, but it favors those that scan and leave anyway. Further, my schedule doesn't always allow me to get to a basketball game early, so I am missing out on this.

Being a currnet 21 year old student, my earliest Terp memories were of watching Profit and Francis at Cole, and going to Byrd before there was an Alumni Center. I guess I'm not loyal enough to get to every basketball game an hour early.

You want to fix Scan and Leave? Set up a system where students can just drop thier ticket in a box, near the student section, starting about half way through the second half. There is security down there that can handle this. Or just get a bunch of interns to bring boxes to the student sections. This isn't a hard thing to solve.

And as far as I'm concerned, those "students" who save up loyalty points to watch UNC and DUKE aren't really interested on the Terp team taking the court...

they should scan tickets AFTER the game for people that want extra points. this will encourage people to stay the entire game. the athletics department clearly thought a long time about this.

There is no solution to scan and leave. Everyone will continue to do it and nobody will be able to stop it. The only solution is for Maryland to put out an exciting and entertaining team every game. People want to see the team do well and there will always be the fair weather fans who just want to see Duke or UNC. If you build it...they will come!

this will be very god for the scan and leave since you get bonus points for getting your scan and leave done before traffic and crowds get bad
