The Terrapin football team is reportedly in talks with Big 12 powerhouse Texas to play a home-and-home series in coming seasons.
Speculation has centered around the first stage of the deal being played at nearby FedEx Field, with a return game played in Austin or Dallas the following year.
No date has been officially set, but a report from www.terptalk.com indicated the series would begin in 2014.
"No contracts have been signed, nor have any details been finalized," a university Athletics Department spokesperson told The Baltimore Sun on Wednesday night.
According to the report, the two teams would receive a combined $3.5 million payout — a substantial amount for an Athletics Department still struggling financially and searching for its next permanent Athletics Director.
The Terps have already agreed to play Notre Dame at FedEx Field on Nov. 20, 2011, the first time the team will make the short trip to Landover for a game.
FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins, is set to host two other high-profile matchups this year. Preseason top-25 teams Virginia Tech and Boise State open their season at the stadium, which has a capacity of more than 91,000, on Sept. 6. Big Ten foes Penn State and Indiana will meet Nov. 20.
While the Terps and Texas do not have a distinguished series history — they last met in 1978, a 42-0 Longhorns win in the Sun Bowl, and the Terps were held scoreless in two prior losses to Texas — the Longhorns boast a sizable alumni base in the Washington metropolitan area and have a reputation for traveling well.
Citing a source within the Texas Athletics Department, The Washington Post reported no deal is currently in place and that a potential series would not fall during either the 2014 or 2015 seasons.
Efforts to reach the this university's Athletics Department were not immediately successful.
