Terps commit five turnovers in 34-13 loss to Rutgers

On wet and rainy afternoon, Terps drop to 1-3 on the season

Muddled by five turnovers, 10 penalties and injuries to two starters, the Terrapin football team again flopped in nonconference play, this time against an offensively impaired Rutgers squad.

In the 34-13 loss, Maryland quarterback Chris Turner had perhaps his worst performance as a Terp, and the Scarlet Knights scored 17 points off turnovers. With the offense unable to control the ball, the Terp defense buckled at the end, allowing two long runs by Rutgers running back Joe Martinek in the final five minutes after not allowing an offensive touchdown for the first 55.

It was an unattractive game, with numerous play stoppages for injuries on the wet field and very little offense from either squad, with the exception of a few of big plays.

But the Scarlet Knights held onto the football – boasting a plus-five turnover advantage – and had success in the running game, which the Terps were unable to establish all game.

Punter Travis Baltz sprained his left ankle in the first quarter, and the Terps (1-3) struggled to replace him throughout the game. Kicker Nick Ferrara and reserve Ted Townsley took turns at the position, but each looked unprepared to fill in for the All-ACC punter.

Right tackle Paul Pinegar injured his back in the first half, as well.

Rutgers quarterback Domenic Natale, playing in place of injured true freshman Tom Savage, completed just 4-of-12 attempts. But Martinek's 147 yards on 19 carries, including those two late scores, buoyed the Scarlet Knights offense, providing just enough to compliment two defensive touchdowns.

Still, the Terp defense held its own for most of the game. The Scarlet Knights got off to a quick lead with an interception returned for a touchdown by Antonio Lowery on the game's first play from scrimmage. But for the rest of the first half, Rutgers was held to just three points. The Terps led at halftime, 13-10

The second half, though, proved to be another story. Terp running back Da'Rel Scott fumbled, Turner fumbled into the end zone and the Terps were decimated.

Fittingly, the game ended with Natale taking a kneel to run out the clock.

"How can there be talk about cutting other sports to cover the football team's ass"

Are you serious? How much money do you think field hockey brings in? The money that football and basketball bring in pay for all 29 sports.

"A million dollars for NOT getting a promotion? If that's true the football program really is being run as a pocket-lining joke at all levels isn't it. "

It's a little more complicated than that. Franklin had a bunch of head coaching offers last year, but we really wanted to keep him on staff. In doing so we promised him the head coaching position and a settlement if we re-niged on that agreement. A lot of people think that Franklin will be a great head coach. He has a lot of energy, and has been a great recruiter for us in the past. It's not a terrible idea to keep him locked up.

Take the $1 million from Fridge and Yow, give it to Franklin and dismiss all of them. How can there be talk about cutting other sports to cover the football team's ass? "Great season, field hockey team. But because the football team sucks, we won't be playing next year." It's just not ethical, take responsibility for your mistakes.

Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin is set to collect $1 million if he does not succeed Ralph Friedgen as the Terrapins' head coach, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Copies of Franklin's and Friedgen's contracts, obtained by the newspaper Tuesday, guarantees Franklin a five-year package worth at least the average paid to other ACC head football coaches.

At the rate Ralph and James Franklin are going...by the time Boston College gets here on November 28, there will be so few fans in the stands that we may have to stand up and introduce ourselves to be applauded by the coach and players....suddenly Ralph the tickets seem to be way too expensive...and the parking seems to be almost robbery...suddenly we all realize that YOU are the only millionaire we can name...and if you should retire Maryland AD haspromised James "WHO" Franklin a cool million if he is not the next coach...what in the deuce was that all about?....does Franklin have pictures of you in a Speedo or something? Gosh if my son is graduating from High School and is heavily recruited...now should he be coached by Nick Saban, or Pete Carroll, Frank Beamer, or one of the other premiere coaches in NCAA football...or should he go to Maryland where he can be coached by the James Franklin?...Have you taken the reputation of 31 - 8 and the three major bowl appearances you enjoyed with Vanderlinden's kids to such a dismal level that James Franklin was the best head coach you and Debbie Yow could hope to take over this program in decline? I think the fans have figured you out Ralph....as they say in Texas...You are all back peddle but no pass.....All hat and no cattle.....You seem to have blown it Coach.....whether it is you or Franklin...the Maryland Terrapins Football Program loses!

At this point, RF should heed the calls of the fans and step down as HC. If he refuses to resign than the AD and school administration should start seeking a replacement not named James "predicatbale" Franklin. The program is in a state of despair as they build new facilites while attendace and revenues are on the decline. RF should not accept his $1.75 million dollar annual salary for this pitiful football. As a proud alumn he should step aside and let the university use that $1.75 million to begin rescuing this program before all hope is gone.

Simply wow. Does the fridge even care any more. He sounds like a beaten man, not only did his team give up with 6 min to go, but he has given up with 6 games left. Just fire your two anchors Don Brown and James Franklin. Let them go ruin another program with their awful "coaching."

Can someone please find Freidgen a QB? He has fielded a bunch of losers since I can remember. Chris Turner is awful, Freidgen had to go all the way to California to recruit this loser. UM has turned more QBs in the NFL than any other team, what happened?

... what else can we say???? Can Fridge please step down???? No more pointing fingers at the players; I had a sense he may have ruined the career of D.R. Scott by making him the scape goat, and now he looks so tentative and even more prone to fumble..... Fridge, as a good guy, please step down, for everybody's good.

"...very little offense from either squad, with the exception of a few of big plays."

two field goals and two touchdowns by Rutgers' offensive players is very little offense? I suppose when compared to how badly other teams have trampled us then maybe this was very little
