If Ralph Friedgen is not retained, the Terrapin football coach will have finished his career on a seven-game losing streak.
The Terps (2-10, 1-7 ACC) lost to Boston College 19-17 on Saturday, finishing a dismal year with the most losses in a single season in program history.
Friedgen, who has two years left on his contract, said after the game he wants to be back next year and expects to be back, but he will meet with Athletics Director Debbie Yow within the next few days to discuss the state of the program.
Friedgen blamed himself for going for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 29 with less than five minutes to play and the Terps trailing 16-10.
Quarterback Jamarr Robinson didn’t make it on a quarterback keeper, and Eagle kicker Steve Aponavicius kicked a 42-yard field goal four plays later after the Terps burned all three of their timeouts during the Eagles’ short possession.
That field goal essentially put the game out of reach.
Robinson found Torrey Smith for a 28-yard touchdown pass to cut the Eagles’ lead to 19-17 with 1:34 left to play, but the Eagles recovered the ensuing onside kicked and kneeled out the clock.
The Terps used both Robinson and quarterback Chris Turner in extended time Saturday, as both quarterbacks were dealing with injuries and were limited in practice in the week leading up to the game.
Turner, who started, had sprained his MCL against N.C. State on Nov. 7 and missed the previous two games, and Robinson played with both a turf toe injury and a shoulder injury.
Turner finished 11-for-17 for 101 yards and Robinson finished 9-for-15 for 115 yards and a touchdown.
The Terps scored the first points of a game for the first time since Sept. 19 when Nick Ferrara kicked a 32-yard field goal to give the Terps a 3-0 lead with 11:57 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles responded with a 66-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dave Shinskie to wide receiver Colin Larmond to make it 7-3 with 6:55 to play in the quarter.
Aponavicius made four field goals to account for the rest of the Eagles’ scoring.
Running back Da’Rel Scott scored on a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for the Terps.
Check back on Monday for more coverage, and for Friedgen news as it breaks.
