Team drops to 2-8

The Terrapin football team's awful season continued to get worse.

Quarterback Jamarr Robinson rushed for 129 yards in his first career start Saturday, but the Terrapin football team allowed 484 yards of total offense and lost to No. 20 Virginia Tech 33-9.

The Terps' fifth consecutive loss drops their record to 2-8 with two games to play.

Robinson, who started in place of the injured Chris Turner, became the first Terp quarterback to rush for more than 100 yards since Shaun Hill in 2001, but he completed just 12-of-32 passes for 104 yards and was sacked six times.

Running back Davin Meggett led all the Terps' other ball carriers with four carries for four yards.

The Hokies jumped to a 14-0 lead early on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Ryan Williams and a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyrod Taylor to tight end Andre Smith in the first quarter.

Taylor also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to flanker Dyrell Roberts and a 64-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jarrett Boykin in the second quarter to give the Hokies a 27-3 lead at halftime.

The Terps' only touchdown of the game came in the fourth quarter when safety Jamari McCollough stripped Taylor of the ball in the endzone and defensive end Jared Harrell fell on it.

It was the Terps' second defensive touchdown in two weeks after they had gone more than three years without scoring one.

The matchup was the Terps' annual Blackout game at Byrd Stadium, even though the game kicked off at 1 p.m and the promotion usually takes place during a night game.

By the fourth quarter, a strong majority of the fans in attendance wore Virginia Tech maroon and orange.

The Terps also added two more names to their depressingly long injury report.

Safety Kenny Tate suffered a high ankle sprain and is out for the season. Punter Travis Baltz broke his finger and is also likely out for the season.
