Even with 174.5 points, two individual titles and seven different top-three finishers on a squad ranked ninth nationally, the Terrapins wrestling team didn't have enough to bring home the gold this weekend.

The Terps placed second in Saturday's Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational, just 7.5 points behind No. 18 Oklahoma. The Terps (3-0) bested Rutgers (163 points), Army (125.5), Clarion (91), American (65), Brockport (36.5) and Buffalo (12).

Although the team left Brockport, N.Y., in second place, many of the Terps' grapplers went home with individual honors in tow.

Junior 165-pound Josh Asper, who is ranked No. 3 by InterMat, was named most outstanding wrestler Saturday after defeating Rutgers' sixth-ranked Scott Winston to improve his personal record to 7-0.

Redshirt sophomore Christian Boley also captured an individual title at 197 pounds, a first in his career. He defeated No. 19 Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers to move to 6-0.

"Today was a great day," coach Kerry McCoy said. "We had some ups and downs, but overall I am happy with the team's performance. [Boley] and [Asper] did a great job, but everyone contributed."

Senior Kyle John, ranked No. 15, picked up a career record with a fall over Rutgers' Joe McCauley just 21 seconds into the match. His time was recorded as the 10th-fastest fall in program history. John finished second at 157 pounds and had two victories in Brockport.

Shane Gentry, a 125-pound sophomore, and Jimmy Sheptock, a 174-pound redshirt sophomore, also earned runner-up honors. Gentry won two matches, one by major decision and one by fall, before losing to No. 3 Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma in the final. Sheptock also lost a close final to No. 18 Greg Zanetti of Rutgers.

Freshman 133-pound Geoffrey Alexander and sophomore heavyweight Spencer Myers each finished third in their respective weight classes.

"[Meyers] and [Alexander] fought back after tough losses, and we improved from last year's performance," McCoy said. "We will continue to build."
