Terrapin football linebacker Alex Wujciak was named Monday to the watch list for the 2010 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

As the linchpin of a Terps' defense in desperate need of playmakers this season, Wujciak had received previous attention from the national media. The rising senior had been listed as an initial candidate for the Lott Trophy and the Lombardi Award, honors bestowed on college football's best defensive players.

Wujciak is joined in his candidacy for the Nagurski Trophy by a deep and talented pool of conference rivals. Four North Carolina players, three Clemson players and two each from Boston College and Miami also made the 74-man list. In total, 13 players from the ACC made the initial watch list for the award.

The list will be trimmed to five finalists Nov. 18, and the winner will be announced Dec. 6 in Charlotte, N.C.

A two-year starter for the Terps, Wujciak finished second in the ACC and eighth nationally in tackles last year. He also received All-ACC honors for the second straight season and has started the team's past 25 games.
